The national park shares the name with the town of Mikumi.
The Mikumi National Park is the fourth largest in the country covering an area
of 3,230 km2. It is bordered by the Selous Game Reserve and the Uluguru and Udzugwa mountains.
The park is similar to Serengeti with savanna vegetation dotted with acacia and baobab trees.
The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the popular centre piece of Mikumi,
draws frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains.
Criss-crossed by a good circuit of game-viewing roads, the Mkata Floodplain is perhaps the most reliable place
in Tanzania for sightings of the powerful eland, the world’s largest antelope.
